We are often asked: “Which drill should I use for a specific screw?”
The answer is not simple because of the difference between the Pilot hole Dia. and the Clearance hole Dia.
Different applications require different holes:
1. For standard woodworking – Countersink, Clearance hole and Pilot hole. Use stepped drills.
A reasonable alternative would be taper point drills.
2. Decking – Only Countersink and Clearance hole. Not necessary to pre-drill the bottom board, as it will always be hidden from view.
3. Attaching furniture fittings like hinges – Only Pilot hole is needed.
